Stablizing Memorial Stadium: Have the risks been adequately assessed?

  • March 14, 2011: Save Strawberry Canyon sent a letter to U.C. Berkeley asking that the University consider not only the seismic situation under the stadium in their plans for earthquake retrofitting, but also the geological conditions eastward of it. We believe that their assessment of the risks are inadequate.
  • March 4, 2011: Michael Layefsky took this photo of the construction in the stadium with a camera lofted by a helium balloon.

  • February 24, 2011: an article from a construction publication about the challenges architects faced in designing a seismic retrofit of the stadium.
  • June 10, 2010: A letter from Save Strawberry Canyon outlines the geologic risks created by the stadium's location.
  • Jan. 19, 2010: an article in Cal Athletics about the Regent's approval of the retrofit plan for the stadium.
  • September 26, 2008: A Seattle Times article summarizes the plans for stabilizing the stadium.
  • Hayward Fault at UC Berkeley: a map and other information at the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory website.
  • a more detailed composite map of the fault that runs through the stadium.
