Comment period for draft Environmental Assessment ended 7/28/2010

July 28 was the deadline for sending comments to the Department of Energy about the draft Environmental Assessment of one of LBNL's demolition/construction projects.

The draft Environmental Assessment for the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Seismic Life-Safety, Modernization, and Replacement of General Purpose Buildings, Phase 2B, is available for public review at http://www.lbl.gov/Community/SeismicPhase2B/index.html.

(When you get to that webpage, you need to scroll down about 2/3 of the way to the bottom, until you see the heading:

NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY ACT (NEPA)

Listed under this heading are the various sections of the draft Assessment as well as a press release and notice of availability.)

Copies of the draft Environmental Assessment should also be available for public review at the Berkeley Public Library at 2090 Kittredge St., Berkeley, CA 94704.

The project, if approved, would remove approximately 43,000 gross square feet of office and laboratory space; provide approximately 43,000 gross square feet of new space in a new general purpose laboratory; and would seismically upgrade the Hazardous Waste Handling Facility.

An "Environmental Assessment" is not the most stringent assessment of environmental and other risks that can be performed. A Federal "Environmental Impact Statement" is much more stringent, and is the type of assessment that should be performed to protect the environment of Strawberry Canyon and residents in the surrounding neighborhoods. You can read a PDF copy of the comments already submitted by Save Strawberry Canyon here.
