Save Strawberry Canyon Board of Directors
Lesley Emmington, President
Lesley is a native of Berkeley who has long been associated with
preservation. She is a co-founder and was first president of Berkeley
Architectural Heritage Association (BAHA) and later worked on the
staff as a preservation specialist. She also served on the Landmark
Preservation Commission. She is president of Save Strawberry Canyon.
Douglas J. Hill, Secretary
Douglas is a lifetime resident of the Oakland/Berkeley area. He graduated from the U.C. Law School at Berkeley in 1964 and practiced in the Bay area for twenty-three years. He has been active in defending the public interest since 1961, when he was involved in the fight against a proposed PG&E nuclear power plant at Bodega Head. Since then he has continued his activism, seeking to defend the interests of the majority of citizens from organizations that would ignore them.
Georgia Wright, Ph.D., Treasurer
Georgia has been a resident of Berkeley for 43
years, taught art history at UCB, UCD, Mills, and Stanford. She holds
the MBA from Haas. She is co-director of the Limestone Sculpture
Provenance Project, which seeks, through nuclear science, to determine
the original site from which French medieval sculpture was removed.
She joined the Board, motivated by her daily walks on the Jordan Fire
Trail and concerned over this amazing habitat and its salubrious
effect on the two-footed creatures that share it.
Ignacio Chapela, Ph.D.
Ignacio is Associate Professor of Microbial Ecology in the Department
of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at UC Berkeley. He is
most well-known and internationally recognized for his research
showing evidence of transgenes in wild Mexican maize; current research
projects include mapping the biogeography of transgenics. Recently he
has divided research time between UC Berkeley and the Norwegian
Institute of Gene Ecology. He also enjoys making time for
contemplative walks in Strawberry Canyon and for collaborations with
indigenous people while doing research in natural resources.
Sylvia McLaughlin.
Sylvia was the co-founder in 1961 of Save The Bay.
She is also a founding member of the board of the Citizens for East
Shore Parks (CESP). She is a founding member (1996) of the Public
Trust Group. In her 93rd year, she has found the time and energy to
be a founding director of Save Strawberry Canyon.
John Shively, P.E.
John has had a long history with both UC Berkeley
and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is a registered
mechanical engineer and is retired from the UC Berkeley College of
Engineering. He worked at LBNL as a development engineer, with the UC
Berkeley Architects and Engineers as principal engineer, and at the
Richmond Field Station as manager. He also spent two years at the
Swiss Institute of Technology (ETH) on nuclear accelerator design.
